Boston Red Sox player Ted Williams safely crash landed his damaged fighter plane after being hit by enemy fire while flying a combat mission in the Korea War on February 19. He later returned home in August and finished the season with 13 home runs and an amazing .407 batting average.

Roy Campanella set a Major League record for most runs batted in ever by a catcher, after smacking a three run home run in a 6 to 3 Dodgers win over the Phillies on September 7.

The Cincinnati Reds officially changed its name from the "Reds" to the "Redlegs", because of the McCarthy era pressure of anti communism. They later changed back to the Reds in 1959.
