St. Louis owner Bill Veek had a midget up to pinch hit during the first game of a double header. Eddie Gaedel a 3 foot 7 inch height challenge person, walked out of the dugout wearing the number 1/8. He came in the game pinch hitting for Frank Saucer and walked on four balls strait. The Detroit Tigers ended up winning the game 6 to 2.

Howie Pollet ended the New York Giants 16 game winning streak with a awesome 3 hit game and a 2 to 0 Pittsburgh Pirates victory. The 16 game win streak lasted from August 12 to 28 which was longest wining streak in National League.
On September 13, the Cardinals became the first team ever to play a double header against 2 different teams on the same day. First they vs the New York Giants and lost 4-6. They then lost again 0-2 to the Braves in a night game.

The New York Giants won the National League pennant from their rivals the Dodgers after Bobby Thompson hit the famous "shot heard 'round the world". It was a perfect ending to a career season in which Thompson batted .293 with 32 home runs and 101 RBIs.
